In January 1983 two Charlotte attorneys A. Michael Troiano Jr. & Alexander Copeland III (NOW YOU KNOW WHERE THE NAME CAME FROM) decided to open a Restaurant in the newly revitalized 4th Ward of Charlotte N.C. It would occupy a hundred year old building that was originally a General Store. After almost four months of renovations that included building the booths and bar Alexander Michael’s opened on April 27, 1983 at 7:15pm. NOTE: THE BAR & BACK BAR IS CONSTRUCTED FROM SOLID OAK DOORS THAT WERE REMOVED FROM THE INDEPENDENCE BUILDING(1908- 1981) THAT STOOD ON THE SQUARE AT TRADE & TRYON STREETS . THE BEER COOLER IS FROM THE 1920’S AND ORIGINALLY FROM A CHARLOTTE GROCERY STORE BUT NOT THIS BUILDING.

“Chain” or “concept” restaurants were the minority in 1983 except for fast food chains. Most reputable eateries were independents and /or family owned. Today the opposite is true. Independents struggle and fade away against corporate giants that have the ability to bankroll flashy décor and to negotiate low purchase prices on food because of their immense volume.

Alexander Michael’s has been a place that has endured and in some cases resisted the many changes that have taken place in our progressive city. I believe that Al Mike’s has flourished because we have remained true to what we are. We didn’t turn into a “Sports Bar” or serve energy drink cocktails or follow any number of trendy, gimmicky ideas when that became the thing to do.

We pride ourselves on a good selection of beer, fresh, well-prepared food that gives you value for your dollar and a friendly attentive service staff in a smoke-free neighborhood tavern atmosphere. We know that we are not for everyone and frankly some people are just wound too tight to come here. Alexander Michael’s is place you can count on and owes its’ success in no small way to the unique individuals that work here now and the people that preceded them.
